Wine – What’s on the Label?

Wine Specialist

A lot of people struggle to understand the huge amount of information that they find on a bottle of wine. It’s also difficult for some people because the writing is often in different languages, and there are all sorts of technical words that end up being used. For example, the “appellation” is often cited, which basically tells you where the grapes that made the wine came from. There is also the variety of grape that was used, and the vintage (which is quite simply the year when the wine was created). You’ve also got to look at other numbers like the alcohol strength of the bottle, and the exact measurement of liquid. All of this can be a bit confusing at times, and many people don’t even bother to read the label to find out more about the wine they are buying.

Extra information is sometimes found on the labels depending on the country in which the wine was made. For example, if a wine was bottled in the US, they have to have all sorts of warnings to consumers and other information that is legally defined. All of this is on there without even mentioning the fact that many wine makers like to put their own little description of the wine onto the label.

That’s pretty much all the information that you’re going to find on a label, and the rest is primarily design. For example, most wineries have their own particularly brand logo and style of labeling the wines they produce. In fact, some wine labels have become so popular that people actually collect them and keep them for many years. Incredibly, there is even a category on the auction site eBay where wine label collectors can buy and sell their findings. You can, of course, buy your own custom wine labels if you’ve made some, or you want to give wine as a gift. This can be found through specialist retailers who will help you design and produce the label.
