Originally a New England native, John recently relocated to Oriental, North Carolina after
spending the better part of a 26-year career at United Technologies Corporation involved in
graphics, print and television advertising, and directing photography. He was drawn to this
region by the endless artistic opportunities provided by the North Carolina coast and rural
farmland.
His paintings, primarily oils “en Plein Air,” depict everyday scenes in a visually graphic
style using a limited but dynamic palette. “Through my art I attempt to capture moments
in time that when viewed evoke memories.” Recent paintings include landscapes, boats
under repair, farm equipment and the porch of Flo’s Cut and Style an Oriental beauty
salon.
John is a graduate of the Silvermine College of Art and the University of Hartford Art
School. While quick to admit his academic training provided an invaluable base, it was
“the guidance of painter Beth Ellis, along with years spent working in partnership with
Connecticut-based designer and fellow painter Ted Bertz that expanded my understanding
of design and color.”
John also credits these two mentors for encouraging him to pursue painting full-time.
As a member of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters’ Society and the Lyme Art Association,
Lyme, CT, John exhibited in numerous juried shows. Since coming to North Carolina he
has received a Purchase Award and a Merit Award at the Bank of the Arts 6th Annual
National Juried Show in New Bern, Best in Show and First Place Two Dimensional Art at
the Circle 10 Gallery Small Works Show in Oriental and the Bardill Purchase Award at the
Beaufort County Arts Council’s 43rd Fine Arts Show in Washington.
He is a member of the Circle 10 Gallery, the Carolina Artist’s Studio Gallery, the Twin
Rivers Art Association, the North Carolina Coastal Pastel Society and the Pamlico County
Plein Air Painters’ Association. John also exhibits at the New Bern Artworks Studio and
Gallery.
